Getting your domain

Your domain is your website's address, like yourbusiness.com. You buy it yourself so it's always in your name, and I connect it to your website for free. It takes about 10 minutes, and this page walks you through every step.

    Pick your name

    Go with your business name if you can. A few tips:

    • Choose .com if it's available. It's what people trust and type by habit.
    • Keep it short and easy to spell out loud. Skip dashes and numbers.
    • If your name is taken, try adding your town or what you do, like smithplumbingmn.com or getsmithplumbing.com.

    Buy it

    I recommend Porkbun.com. It's simple, has honest pricing, and includes privacy protection at no extra cost. Cloudflare and Namecheap are good too. If you'd rather use GoDaddy, that works, but expect a lot of add-on offers.

    • Search your name and add the .com to your cart.
    • Choose 1 year. Check the renewal price so there are no surprises next year.
    • Make your account with your own email, then pay with your own card.

    Domain sites try to sell you things you don't need. You only need the domain itself.

    Turn on auto-renew and keep your login safe

    Turn on auto-renew and keep your card up to date. If a domain expires, someone else can buy it. Save your login somewhere safe, and turn on two-step verification if they offer it.

    Just send me the domain you bought, like "I got smithplumbing.com on Porkbun." That's it. Never send me your password or card info.

    • I point your website to your new address.
    • I turn on the secure padlock (https) so browsers never say "Not Secure."
    • I make sure both yourbusiness.com and www.yourbusiness.com work.
    • I test it on phones and computers, then text you when it's live.

    It's usually live in under an hour. Sometimes it takes up to 48 hours to work everywhere, and that's normal.

Common questions

I already own a domain. What do I do?

Great, you don't need a new one and you don't need to move it. Just tell me where you bought it (GoDaddy, Squarespace, Wix, Google, etc.). We'll update a few settings together and it'll point to your new site. Don't remember where it is? Tell me the domain and I'll help you find out.

Will my old website or email stop working?

When we connect your domain, it will show your new website instead of the old one. If you already have email at your domain (like you@yourbusiness.com), I'll make sure your email settings stay in place so your email keeps working.

Can I get an email like me@mybusiness.com?

Yes. The easiest option is free email forwarding: anything sent to you@yourbusiness.com shows up in the email you already use, like Gmail. Porkbun and Cloudflare include this at no extra cost, and I'll set it up with you. If you want a full separate inbox, Google Workspace is a paid option, and I'll help you decide if it's worth it.

Why don't you just buy the domain for me?

So it's always yours. When the domain is in your name, on your account, you're never stuck with me or anyone else. That's how it should be.

Do you need my password?

No, never. You stay logged in on your own account, and I just tell you what to copy and paste. I'll never ask for your password or card details.

What if I get stuck?
